Mamayev Square 2011 graphite on marble, 31 x 36 inches. Pérez Art Museum Miami collection
“Mamayev Square (2011) immerses the viewer in an urban wilderness of hard angles and cheeless pyramids. The title of the piece alludes to the Russian monument commemorating the siege of Stalingrad. Rather than overlooking the city, however, the statue becomes just another fixture within a monolithic skyline. Novoa’s work reminds us how deeply history, as discourse, is written into the built spaces we inhabit every day.” -Rudi Kraeher
